As a new immigrant in Canada, it’s super important that you are aware of these job search pitfalls. One of the most common scams targeting new immigrants involves fraudulent LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) job offers.

Today, I’ll help you uncover this scam and share how to avoid it so that you’re better positioned to secure legitimate job offers.

How to spot an LMIA Scam

So an LMIA is a document Canadian employers must obtain before hiring a foreign worker.

Here’s what they do: These scammers offer you fake job positions and charge you a lot of money to process your papers or offers.

If you notice these, just run:

  • Generic Job Descriptions: If the job description matches the NOC (National Occupational Classification) description almost word-for-word, it's most likely a scam.

  • High Processing Fees: Legit employers typically don't charge job seekers fees for employment opportunities. There might be some sort of arrangement after you’ve secured the job but never before you’ve secured an offer.

  • You’re being pressured to act quickly: If they’re telling you to act now and oh this offer will expire in 24 hours – it’s most definitely a scam.  They do this just so you don’t have the time to verify the job or ask questions.

  • Lack of Transparency: Be wary of employers who are hesitant to provide details about the company or the job.

  • Overemphasis on LMIA: If the job offer focuses solely on the LMIA process and not the job itself, it's a red flag.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Research! : Do your due diligence. Verify the company's existence, reputation, and online presence.

  • Use Verified Job Board: Many scam job postings appear on popular job boards. I’m not trying to demonise job boards cos we also built a job board for New Immigrants. However, thread with caution.

  • Avoid Paying Fees: I know. You’re under pressure and the offer looks too good to be missed. But the truth is, a legit employer won’t charge you an employment fee.

  • Most importantly, trust your instincts. If something smells fishy, it probably is.

Finding Legitimate LMIA Jobs

While LMIA scams are rampant, genuine job opportunities exist. Here are some tips:

  • Use Government Resources: Job Bank Canada and approved job boards in your province are usually safer and legit.

  • Never walk alone: Network with other Immigrants. Connect with people who have successfully secured LMIA jobs. Ask questions.

  • Attend Job Fairs and Industry Events: These events offer opportunities to meet potential employers in person as opposed to blind applying.

LMIA jobs are real and the pay is super good too. However, due to the high influx of foreigners in the country, there are more frogs than princes. Keep your eyes peeled and always trust your instincts.
