Jobs + Top opportunities of the week
Living in Canada is great but having job security is more important. So here’s a sweet piece of advice everyone might have been hoarding from you.
If you’ve been following your dreams in Canada for a while now and it’s looking like your dreams don’t want to follow you, I suggest you try following the money. Your dreams might see that and decide to follow you after all.
Have you heard about Trade Skills? Do you think it’s for uneducated folks alone?
You see, one often overlooked sector that offers remarkable job security and lucrative opportunities is the Trade Industry. Most people, especially professional Africans, tend to look down on trade skills like it’s beneath them.
Whether you recently moved or are considering a career switch, you can find a stable and rewarding career in the Trade Industry.
WHY?
The opportunities in the Trade Industry are essential for the maintenance and development of infrastructure in the Canadian economy. Periodt!
In case you’re not aware:
Menial Jobs are scarce, and corporate jobs are hard to break into but you know what’s always in demand? TRADE SKILLS! With infrastructure projects, ongoing maintenance needs, social events, and technological advancements, skilled trades people are always needed.
Did you know that Industrial electricians and mechanics, for example, make at least $47 per hour? For newbies, entry-level positions start at around $63,937 annually, and super experienced workers can make up to $138,454 annually. Do the maths.
If you already learnt a trade skill back home, don't hang it on the shelf while you struggle to land a tech job here. A trade career can be very satisfying especially if you enjoy working with your hands and solving practical problems.
Compared to the traditional four-year degree, trade schools offer shorter, more focused programs that can get you into the workforce quickly.
How to get started:
Explore different trades to find one that aligns with your interests and skills.
Enroll in a Trade School. Some great schools include the Nothern Alberta Institute of Technology or The British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Apprenticeships: This is just like Interning. This gives you an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge you have to on-the-job training. You can visit this website to find apprenticeship opportunities in your area.
Ensure you get the necessary certifications and licenses to practice your trade legally. The requirements often vary by trade and province, so check with local regulatory bodies in your province.
Keep Learning. Just like every industry, the trade industry is constantly evolving with new technologies and techniques. You can check out Red Seal programs for nationally recognized certifications.

"Ever since I moved here, I have learnt so much in such a short period. One of the things I quickly learnt about this part of the world is the power of networking and referrals. If you network in the right circles and you have the right people blowing your trumpet and referring you for roles, the professional journey that will take someone else 10 years to get to senior manager can take you 3 years or less”

This daunting move brought moments of self-doubt, but through the power of networking and a positive mindset, she discovered numerous opportunities in Canada.
