Immigrant to Immigrant: Living in Canada

Being a new immigrant in Canada comes with a barrage of feelings. You arrive in Maple Town with many dreams, hopes and principles that you’ve sworn by everything to adhere to.

Immigrant to immigrant, one thing I’ve realized from moving across different continents is this: Your dreams are valid but they are also subject to modifications.

Immigrant to immigrant: I know you dream of returning to your home country in a few years. But here’s the hard truth. You most likely will not. The minute you passed the check-in gate and stepped on that plane, you said goodbye for a long time.

If you’re ever craving African food, go to the Asian or Mediterranean stores/markets. They sell similar products and are even much more affordable than you’d find in an African market.

And oh, Tylenol doesn’t work. I hope you brought your paracetamol and antibiotics with you.

For the most part at work, do your job and go home. These Canadians will smile at you and ask if you’re good but they don’t give a sh*t!

Finally, you’re not stronger than the loneliness that hits you when you’re so far from home with no one to call your own. Embrace it and work your way out.
