Leaving a Toxic Job in Canada

Horrible bosses/ workplaces are a global pandemic. Don’t even think for one second that you’re alone.

Hello, new local👋

In Today's Newsletter

You toiled hard; and put out hundreds of applications. You cried, prayed, and finally landed your dream job in Canada. (or so you thought).

You signed up for impactful work days, happy hours, generous PTOs, and Pizza Fridays! But now, you’re trapped in Miranda Priestly's metaverse. (Lol. I’ve been waiting to write that)

We all know that is not what you left your home country for! And you’re ready to quit ASAP.

Great! I’m here cheering you on but hold on.

First, here’s a tight hug for you. Horrible bosses/ workplaces are a global pandemic. Don’t even think for one second that you’re alone.

Now let’s talk about how to quit in a way that won’t blow up in your face.

  1. Document everything: Keep records of incidents, emails, and witness testimonies. This evidence is crucial if you need legal help – which I 100% advise you to do.

  1. Get out of your head: Some challenges you face might be rooted in cultural differences or a lack of familiarity with Canadian work norms. I know someone who got fired because he felt like his ‘Younger’ line manager kept talking down to him. He reacted in anger and the rest they say, is history.

  1. Talk to people: Talk to other immigrants who have successfully acclimated to the Canadian work environment. Talk to friends or colleagues in your industry. They might offer valuable support, advice, and resources.

  1. Explore your options: Start looking for a new job and consider EI (Employment Insurance). Your EI provides temporary financial support while you search. However, quitting your job rashly can affect your EI eligibility. I advise you to consult a lawyer on this.

Your Lifeline: The Open Work Permit

If you’re trapped in a toxic workplace, this program offers a glimmer of hope. It allows vulnerable workers, including those experiencing exploitation or workplace discrimination based on race, to apply for an open work permit.

Here's what you might qualify for:

  • The ability to work for any employer in Canada. This gives you the freedom to find a more welcoming workplace.

  • The potential to leave your current job without impacting your EI eligibility (Ensure you consult an immigration lawyer).

OWP is not for folks who can’t tolerate the day-to-day struggles of work. There are strict eligibility requirements and you'll need evidence of discrimination.

As a new immigrant, having options can feel like a luxury but this doesn’t mean you need to condemn yourself to a life of misery. Do your research, seek legal counsel and always believe you’re never stuck.

TEA O’CLOCK

INSPIRE

My journey to Canada was not easy. I spent a year in Malaysia where refugees often do not have access to basic needs like education or banking services and their rights are often ignored.  Now that I’m in Canada….

Khalid’s story sheds light on the challenges that many immigrants and refugees face in their journey to Canada. Yet, Khalid's optimism and perseverance are truly inspiring, as is his faith in the opportunities and security that British Columbia provides.
