SHHHH… HAVE YOU HEARD?
Canada is raising its Federal Minimum wage to $17.75 per hour on April 1st. This is not an April Fool’s stunt, so if I were you, I’d start plotting how to ask my boss for a raise.
First things first
Make sure you actually deserve that raise. Fair enough?
Now, take a look at industry standards. Find out how much others in your field are earning compared to your current salary.
If you're earning around the average, aim for a 10-15% increase.
If you're underpaid and overworked, plan to push for 20-25%—or even more.
Build Your Case
Very few employers are generous enough to give you a raise just because you asked for it—or even because you deserve it. You need to back up your request with data.
Highlight your key contributions.
Show how your work has impacted the company's growth.

Timing is Everything.
Make sure you’re making this request at the right time—both for your boss and for the company. A well-timed ask increases your chances of success.
Prepare for Any Outcome
Even if you tick all the boxes, you might still get a NO. Ask yourself what that means:
Is it a Not Now? If so, when would be a good time?
Is it a hard No? If so, what’s your next move?
Most importantly,
Don’t just rely on your employer. Invest in quality Career Branding by optimizing your CV and LinkedIn for better visibility and opportunities. With an employer, nothing is ever 100% certain.

“I felt I wasn't getting opportunities because of my lack of Canadian work experience. Recruiters didn't say it directly — it was subtle. In phone conversations, recruiters would ask where my experience was based. I'd explain it wasn't in Canada, and the conversation would continue, but they'd never get back to me…”
When Dapo Bankole moved to Canada, he never imagined that despite years of IT experience, he’d spend nine months job hunting, juggling minimum-wage night shifts just to survive.
But through mentorship, persistence, and one key opportunity, he broke into his field, built his own tech consulting business, and even became a TEDx speaker, proving that while the journey is tough, success is possible.
