LOOK WHO’S HIRING! 💼

Hi! Dami here, and welcome to this week’s issue of The New Local, your guide for professionals making Canada home.

Spring is in full swing, and with it come fresh opportunities (and maybe a bit of pollen 😅). You know how, when settling into a new place, the smallest things can feel like massive hurdles? You finally get a grip on the transit system, only to realize your job search is a whole other challenge. And just when you think you've got a handle on your routine, you realize there are things you never even thought about. Like dental care.

I was chatting with a friend who recently moved to Canada, and she told me how overwhelmed she felt trying to figure out health benefits; it seemed like one more thing on top of everything else. But here’s the thing: Canada’s dental care policy made it a lot easier for young adults, and I think you should know how to take advantage of it.

🧾 CDCP: All You Need To Know

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal initiative providing dental coverage to uninsured Canadians who meet specific criteria. It covers various dental services, including preventive care, diagnostic exams, restorative treatments, and more. You should note, though, that this doesn’t cover services under cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening or implants.

📅 When Can You Apply?

The CDCP is rolling out in phases:

  • May 15, 2025: Applications open for Canadians aged 18 to 34.

  • May 29, 2025: Applications open for Canadians aged 35 to 54.

Coverage for new applicants may begin as early as June 1, 2025. To qualify for the CDCP, you must:

  • Be a Canadian resident.

  • Have a net family income of less than $90,000.

  • Not have access to private dental insurance (excluding provincial or federal government programs).

  • Have filed a tax return in the preceding year.

If you meet these criteria, you're likely eligible for the CDCP.

💳 How It Works

Once enrolled, you'll receive:

  • A welcome package from Sun Life, including your CDCP member ID and coverage start date.

  • Information on your co-payment level, if applicable.

You can use your CDCP member ID to book appointments with participating dental providers. You’ll still need to pay some out-of-pocket costs, so be sure to ask your dentist beforehand, because some services might not be covered entirely.

📢TIP 1: Not all dental providers participate in the CDCP. Use the Sun Life CDCP Provider Search Tool to find a participating dentist near you. You can search by location to find a provider that accepts CDCP coverage.

📢TIP 2: When your age group's application window opens, you can apply online through the Government of Canada CDCP Application Portal. You'll need to provide:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN).

  • Date of birth.

  • Full name.

  • Home and mailing address.

  • List of dental coverage through government social programs (if applicable).

  • Notice of Assessment for the previous year [from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)].

And you’re good to go!

GET RE-BRANDED FOR CANADIAN JOB OPPORTUNITIES🔗

Whether you’ve been in Canada for 2 months, 2 years, or a decade, one thing stays the same: GROWTH.

But how do you show off all the work you've put in to become such a badass at your job without strong career branding?

👔DON’T MISS THESE EVENTS!

Here’s a quick roundup of events you can look forward to this May:

  1. Immigration Fair, Vancouver (May 14, 2025): Looking for a job or just want to network? Don’t miss the Immigration Fair Canada event in Vancouver; it's a free one-stop event connecting newcomers with employers, educators, and support services. It’s happening on May 14 (10 AM–2 PM) at the Pan Pacific Vancouver, and all entries are free. Be sure to bring your resume and your questions!

  2. Job Fair for Immigrants, Toronto (May 27, 2025): Mark your calendar for May 27 at Toronto City Hall. Immigrant Women in Business (IWB) is hosting a job fair and networking event for all newcomers. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet employers from the GTA, attend workshops, and connect with fellow immigrant professionals (not restricted to women alone).

  3. MOSAIC Annual Job Fair, Vancouver (May 13, 2025): Another great event on the west coast, one day before the Immigration Fair. MOSAIC’s Job Fairwill feature employers from various sectors eager to hire newcomers in Metro Vancouver. If you’re in BC, you might as well hit two fairs in two days! 💼👍

🚸The Kids Are Alright

In even bigger news, the Canada Strong Pass initiative is offering free travel for kids and youths under 18 on VIA Rail this summer! This is an incredible opportunity for young families to experience Canada's beauty without worrying about travel costs.

Here’s how it works:

  • Who’s Eligible: Children and youth under the age of 18, when travelling with a parent or guardian. Young adults aged 18-24 can still get discounted fares during the same period.

  • When: This summer, from June to August 2025.

  • Where: Across VIA Rail’s entire national network.

🌲 Other Perks of the Canada Strong Pass

Along with free VIA Rail travel, the Canada Strong Pass also offers:

  • Free access to national museums and galleries for under-18s.

  • Discounted camping fees at national parks.

The Strong Pass is part of an initiative to help Canadians rediscover their country, particularly amid ongoing cross-border tensions and economic challenges. For families, it’s a win-win. It’ll certainly help you and yours get around more!
