When I first moved here, one of my first culture shocks was how ‘nice’ people were. I quickly realized I had to audit certain expressions and attitudes if I wanted a good life here— especially at work.

At first, I didn’t think I’d have any problems because I considered myself a good person. However, it dawned on me that the openness and expressive communication we value in Africa doesn’t quite work here.
In Canada, being a good person isn’t enough if you’re not also ‘nice.’ Here’s what that entails:
Engaging in small talk: I’m not much of a talker, but I’ve learned to prioritize conversations about the weather or how I make my pancakes—even with the craziest deadlines looming.
The 5 magic words aren’t just for kids: “Sorry,” “Please,” and “Thank You” will take you farther than your skills can.
Self-sufficiency: Your junior colleague or the cleaner isn’t there to run errands for you. Get your own coffee and snacks.
Now, If you’re naturally nasty, it might be worth working on that—or can you at least pretend to be nice, like most Canadians do?
What are your thoughts? I’d love to hear from you.
